Some feel that when summer is gone, so is fishing season. That is true for many only because it signals the start of hunting season. However, I actually prefer the serenity of the fall streams when the pressure is much lighter and the air is crisper. According to local guides, everything in the area is fishing pretty well

From the feedback I have been getting, the entire state is fishing well. Hatches have been occurring, and the most troublesome area for anglers at that moment seems to be figuring out what to choose from. While I can not recommend a particular fly right now because there are so many different hatches, the fishing is very worth while. So get out there and fish. It sure beats watching preseason football.

At this time of the season, it is more important to find the “perfect spot” and the “perfect drift.” When I speak of the perfect spot, I do not mean the right stream. Instead I mean the right spot on whatever stream you happen to be located on. Look for water that will be typically holding fish. This includes edges of the stream flow, pools and back-flowing eddies that occur behind larger rocks.

Many of the local guides have been mostly guiding on stretches on the Colorado River, where the fishing has been very good. But, if you are not looking to float and want to stay local to Breckenridge and Summit County, we suggest the old standard of throwing small midge patterns, such as an RS2, WD40 or WD50. With all of the wind lately, I have also seen many hoppers, even along the bike path. In such instances, some small hopper imitations should work as well.

This entire summer has been thrown off due to strange river flow patterns and weather systems. It seemed like the green drake hatch never really occurred compared to prior years. But we are expecting the forth-coming blue-winged olive hatches to be strong. And as the hatches slow, streamer fishing for spawning browns will be fun for sure. I have actually fished streamers all summer and have had some success pretty much every time out. Steamers may not be the fly-du-jour of the purist, but for me, they work consistently. And finally, keep an eye out on windy days for those hoppers. Pretty much anytime in the fall, especially in the South Platte Basin, is a good time to fish hoppers and droppers.

Get of the couch and get out there and fish. We are blessed with a wealth of fishing here in Summit County and the surrounding areas. So enjoy the relative solitude of the fall streams and be thankful that you are here in such an amazing location.

The weather for owners of Breckenridge Real Estate is shaping up to make for a great week of fishing this first week of July. Temperatures in the Summit County Real Estate region will be pleasantly in the 70’s. The melt off is beginning to slow down and as it does, water levels will drop and clarity will rise. I have seen many people fishing the stocked area of “The Steps” in Breckenridge this past week. Also, I hear that the alpine lakes are a good choice right now for hungry natives.

This fishing report is brought to you by Brenda DePalma and her team at Summit Mountain Home. Brenda DePalma is an expert in all of Summit County Real Estate. To search Summit County MLS for free, click here.

Fishing from Silverthorne down to Green Mountain has seem the Green Drake hatch move on, but you might find a few fish eager for drakes. However, but you’d be better off with a caddis, especially in the afternoons. Nymphing, as always, can be effective, especially in the morning. Hopper-dropper rigs are still effective, especially with attractor nymph beads.
