The Summit Trail Running Series kicked off this past Wednesday night at the Country Boy Mine, which is right up the street from my Breckenridge Home. One of the nice things about being one of the lucky people to own  Breckenridge Real Estate is the abundance of outdoor activities and of the people that partake in them.  The Summit Trail Running Series is a prime example.  There were close to 200 runners for the first official race of the season.  There was a so-called “fun run” that was free last Wednesday.  Their idea of a “fun run” around here is lots of vertical.  And the course off of French Creek was no different.  Most of the course was either straight up or straight down.  Not a whole lot of flat going on.  The courses for the Trail Running Series are amazingly scenic and it is a fun way to learn about the local trails and meet other people from the community.  There are 6 events to the series.  The next event will be on next Wednesday, June 16th at the Flumes Trail which is right up the hill from the Seven Eleven.  Each event has an after party, where there are race awards, door prizes and free beer to the runners.  If you would like to know more about the Trail Running Series or any other events in Breckenridge, contact us at Summit Mountain Home. Recently, there have been stories of a heavy-handed police force in Summit County. I am a law abiding citizen and respectful and supportive of law enforcement.  Because I want to put it out there that skaters might lose certain rights,I thought it would be worth while to contribute this story that I read from a local resident who happens to skateboard.   On July 22, this Summit County Resident  was skateboarding from Copper to Frisco on the recreation path and having a great time.  I actually happened to be riding my bike from Breckenridge to Vail Pass and back and noticed the skateboarders on the bike path.  They were in control and posing no danger or threat to anyone.  I was actually amazed at the skill and control they possessed while going down a long hill.

What follows is a quote from the local skater.  He talked about how he came down the bike path in control and was having a good time.

“Unfortunately, that was about to change as I entered Frisco’s Main Street. In control and not obstructing traffic, I pulled out to ride in the empty parking spaces along the street, figuring it was probably safer for all parties not to have a skateboarder dodging pedestrians on the sidewalks.

After one block of this, I heard the siren from a police car and the officer approached. Instead of being courteous and perhaps explaining to me the law which I was breaking, he was immediately confrontational. In addition to “weaving all over the street and obstructing traffic” I was unnecessarily told of his and town counsel’s prejudice for skateboarders.

I was then issued a $110 ticket for “Skateboarding in the Street.” Interestingly enough, I managed to film the entire event on my helmet cam. Search youtube.com for “Frisco police skateboarding” if interested.

Ultimately, my point is that professional courtesy can go a long way. Had I happened to be an out-of-town tourist, my trip may have been ruined and I might never return to Frisco.

However, I am local and my respect for law enforcement is being stressed. They are civil servants, whose salaries are paid for by our tax dollars. Perhaps while they are in uniform, they should attempt to show a little more civility and respect to both tourists and locals in Summit County”

To some point, I have to agree with him.  Especially if he was in control and not endangering anyone.  On the other hand, I often see skaters in Breckenridge going down Main Street and passing cars, which is not cool.  Not only is it illegal, but I don’t want to see someone get hurt or killed.

So, it is going to take some give and take from both sides.  The streets can’t be like the wild west, with everyone doing whatever they want to do.  As far as I know, skating in the street is still legal here in Breckenridge.  But that privilege can quickly be revoked if respect is not shown by the skaters to pedestrians and vehicles.  However, with the recent crackdown on skaters and cyclists, we as the taxpaying public have to ask where our tax dollars are better spent, ticketing skaters and cyclists or are there bigger problems that should be focused on?

The little yellow rubber ducks will be back for the 25th Edition of this event.   The Summit Foundation puts on this yearly day of ducky fun to help raise funds to improve the quality of life for Breckenridge residents and the those of Summit County. Held at the Riverwalk Center, the Blue River is filled with races from the Kid’s Duck Dash to the People’s Rubber Duck Race. The day culminates with myriad rubber ducks racing down the river in hopes of winning their owners some awesome prizes.  The Grand Prize is a leased car for two years.  You can buy your ducks all over town, but I suggest supporting my friends at Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant in their quest to sell more ducks than anyone else.  Below are some images from last year’s day of rubber duck fun.

This week, the new Breckenridge Campus at Colorado Mountain College opened and it is a beautiful setting. Afterall, How many campuses are at the base of a world-class ski area?  The new campus has tripled the size of the previous school, allowing for additional programs to be added.

One of the really nice things about CMC is that you can transfer the credits for most classes to a 4 year college, thus potentially saving as much as $50,000.00 over the cost of taking these core courses at a 4 year institution.  So, not only are you saving your family a ton of money, but you student can hit the powder of the slopes at Breckenridge Ski area between classes.

Breckenridge also has a free transit system, so your student would not need a car in Breckenridge.  There are free buses that go from various parts of town to the new campus, the ski area and other essential parts of town.

This ordinance, which was controversial from the beginning, required homeowners in Breckenridge to create a firebreak by cutting down trees, both healthy and unhealthy, within a certain distance from a home. The ordinance was defeated by unanimous vote after a successful petition drive at the grassroots level.  It was reported that many homeowner’s would have had costs in excess of $1,200 for the tree removal.
