Instructors will teach Country Western dance steps from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (that’s a lot of two-steppin’ and Electric Sliddin’). The Kid’s Corral runs until 10 p.m. with movies, games and crafts in the Copper Conference Center’s lower level. The buffet will be out from 6:30-8 p.m., featuring signature soups and salads, entrees such as crab stuffed sole, seared stuffed chicken, vegetable en croute and prime rib. And, be sure to save some room for desserts, such as flambé peaches with short cake to assorted truffles and tartlets. Oh, and there’s kid appropriate food such as mac and cheese, chicken tenders and pizza.

Kokopelli’s deck offers exclusive viewing of fireworks at 9 p.m., or you can stand slopeside to watch the event. Reservations for the country celebration are required; call (970) 968-3027.

And be sure to not celebrate too much, because on New Years Day, there will be a 5k race at the Breckenridge Golf Course Nordic Center.

Our nation’s ski population is quickly changing it’s demographics. The ski population is aging and big changes will be required within the ski industry to maintain the level of skier numbers that the industry has become accustomed to over the past two decades. This article on the changing demographics of the skier popultion has been posted by Summit Mountain Home, where we specialize in Breckenridge Real Estate (click to search MLS for free) and Breckenridge Foreclosures. You can contact us at 970-409-9145 or click here. Check out some of our Breckenridge Real Estate listings by clicking here. Contact us for all of you Breckenridge and Summit County Real Estate needs.

Our nation’s baby boomer population has long been the driving force behind the sport of skiing. This population seems to have reached their demographic peak on the slopes. And they age and hang up their skis, we find the traditionally robust skiing market of Colorado resorts searching for their own version of the little blue pill to up the virility of it’s demographic base in the industry.

According to David Belin, 40, a lifelong skier from Boulder-based RRC Associates who led the Model for Growth research project for the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), the baby boomer will be hanging their skis up over the next 5 years. The resorts have to plan ahead for this huge loss of skier base population.

Local Colorado Ski resorts are attempting to attract a new generation of skiers and snowboarders to replace the boomers without biting the hand that has fed them for so long. Most visible are the addition of huge terrain parks and massive halfpipes designed to appeal to X Games and Dew Tour Crowds. These are the next generation. There are now more than 60 terrain parks in Colorado, an average of more than two per resort, and a dozen halfpipes. As an indication of their popularity, Echo Mountain is a 50-acre dedicated terrain park just 35 miles from Denver, which had 18,758 visitors during its first full year of operation in 2006-07 and 30,208 visitors last year.

The most recent statistics from NSAA serve to heighten the urgency of finding new snow-sport participants. According to NSAA, a third of all resort visitors last year were 45 or older, a continued expansion among that age group. During the past decade, the percentage of visitors — defined as one skier or snowboarder riding a chairlift per day — age 45 to 54 has increased from 14.0 percent to 19.9 percent, with age groupings above 54 also showing an increase. The overall industry figures, though, dropped to 57.1 million skier visits last year, down from 60.5 in 2007.

Whether the dip is a precursor to a precipitous drop led by a mass retreat of an aging demographic unwilling or unable to spend time on the mountain remains to be seen. But if not addressed, researchers say participation numbers are expected to decline drastically.

Even though there was limited early-season terrain, Keystone Resort opened its season Nov. 5 with a 25-feature park that saw skiers and riders lined up 10 deep for the opportunity to grind rails and jump tabletops. Nearby, Copper Mountain opened a day later with a comparable park highlighting the recent addition of Woodward at Copper, a slopeside action sports training facility created to teach athletes proper jib, or trick technique, before taking it to the snow. Copper’s new priority was being the first to open a halfpipe.

This is a big change from the old days, where boomers were catered to with extensive snow grooming, private lessons, luxury lodges and exclusive clubs. Such amenities remain, but the emphasis is clearly shifting toward youth-oriented offerings.

Beaver Creek which was once the exclusive lair of the upscale boomer crowd, is now turning from posh to trying to lure youth with a bigger and better terrain park.

I recall when there was a huge rift between the conservative style of the boomers and those dreaded snow boarders. The snow boarders were considered punks and it took a long time for them to gain a foothold in this industry. It grew as a sort of underground wave in the beginning until it became so huge, that the industry could no longer ignore it. Now, the industry is thankful for the new technology of snow boards and twin tip skis as the techniques and tricks they are designed for are viewed as the savior of the industry, along with the youth that come with these advancements.

One key statistic that is scaring ski industry analysts is that only about 15 percent of those who try skiing and snowboarding continue with the sports. That statistic has served as a real wake-up call that we are not doing enough as an industry to make them into lifelong participants.

An increased willingness by resorts to break from tradition could make a difference. Places such as Copper Mountain are hopeful that offering better training will encourage younger riders to stick with the sport until they’ve mastered it. “We’re trying to get people away from what we call the ‘huck and hope’ method — where they throw themselves off a jump, start spinning and hope it works out,” Woodward at Copper director Ben Brown said. “This is just the next evolution of the sport, and we want to make sure we engage the next generation for a great experience for every kid that picks up skiing and snowboarding.”

Let’s hope that the ski industry figures out what it will take to engage and retain the younger skiers and riders, as they will determine if ski areas continue to exist for generations to come.

The weather here in Breckenridge and Summit County has been cold and those cold temperatures and snowmaking have led to the early opening Tuesday of Keystone’s A51 terrain park. The park opens with the Park Lane Jump Line as well as Jib Alley. A51 will have a total of five jumps and more than 20 features. The resort will move the features from the park’s current location (near the gondola) into the permanent home for the winter season in the A51 area on Dercum Mountain.

There have been some big stars of extreme winter sports at Keystone. Keystone invited some of the biggest ski and snowboard stars to preview the park and help our park crew test and refine the jumps including: Andreas Wiig, Torstein Horgmo, Simon Dumont, TJ Schiller, Jossi Wells, Tim Russell, Andreas Hatveit, Haldor Helgason, Ryan Cruze, Chris Chance, Scott See and Joe Mango.

Every season Keystone hosts multiple events in A51, this year including the Gatorade Free Flow Tour and Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam.

Here are some dates and details on those two competitions and stay tuned for more information on other competitions to come.

Gatorade Free Flow Tour is set for Jan. 23-24 and will search for the country’s best and brightest amateur snowboarders and skiers. Free Flow Tour is the “official amateur series” of the Winter Dew Tour and brings the opportunity for local talent to compete against the world’s best at Winter Dew Tour. The winner of the Free Flow Finals earns a wildcard spot to compete against the industries top professionals.

Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam will be held April 10. The Peanut Butter and Rail Jam is Volcom’s free amateur snowboard contest series. The goal of the series is to give something back to young riders. Instead of having rails or features set up in a row, three rails are set up side-by-side, creating a single, large rail zone. The event is absolutely free, on a first come first serve basis, and boasts tons of free prizes and PB&J sandwiches. Also, everyone who enters walks away with a Volcom PBRJ shirt and other prizes.

Breckenridge has been making snow like crazy and the Freeway Terrain Park is open. In addition, Copper Mountain has opened it’s 22 foot superpipe.

Breckenridge, Colorado – The time to invest in Breckenridge real estate is now! The planets of the investment heavens have aligned to make this the ideal time to invest in Breckenridge Real Estate. I specialize in helping investors find the ideal ski home for their family’s budget and needs. You can contact me, Brenda DePalma, at 970-406-1385 or click here. To search the Breckenridge and Summit County MLS for free, click here. Here are the reasons why I say invest now in Breckenridge and Summit County Real Estate:

1. Prices are down – The economy has slowed things slightly here in Breckenridge. Nothing like what is happening in Vail and Aspen. Vail, Aspen and Beaver Creek have seen huge price and volume drops. However, Breckenridge has been stable.

2. Skier numbers remain up – In fact, I have polled many local business owners from Main Street, Breckenridge, and this holiday season has seen record volume for them.

3. Mortgage Rates are down – making your purchase more affordable. Mortgages are at 30 year lows.

4. It is a buyer’s market – After decades of bidding wars, the buyer is now in control and the owner must be more flexible with pricing and terms. You, the investor, are now in the driver’s seat.

5. Gas Prices – Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin and Keystone are all a commuter’s dream. Those living in the Front Range, are only 60-90 minutes from the World Class ski resorts of Summit County, Colorado real estate. The fact that gas prices are down so much, makes Breckenridge and Summit County very attractive to the Front Range crowd.
