Summit Mountain Challenge adds new terrain while retaining old favorites

The SMC is made up of seven events for adults and eight for children.

The Frisco Roundup, the kickoff event scheduled for June 4, has been around since the inception of the series.  The course, nick-named the “Frisco Rollercoaster”, tests bike handling and the ability to ride in varied terrain in appropriate gearing.

June 14, bikers will ride the Tour de Trash, a 4.5-mile loop: Two track, singletrack, climbing and some fun descents..  Want to race an eco-friendly race?  They don’t get any greener than recycling a landfill as a race course

The June 25 Gold Run Rush, combines rolling terrain, steep technical climbs and fast descents on former mining roads. All levels can compete and the beginners’ course is built for entry-level skills.

The Colorado Trail and the Horse Shoe Gulch will be sampled during the brand new Swan River Rampage on July 16th. Athletes will ride through Breck’s back country and will be faced with long sustained climbs..  It should be an epic course.

Speaking of Epic, Peaks Trail Time Trial, July 30, is “race of truth” from Frisco to Breckenridge. It starts riders individually, just like the time trials seen in the grand tours, like the Tour de France or Giro Italia.  It is each athlete against the clock, not knowing placement until all racers are done.

Scheduled for August 13,  Pennsylvania Gulch is known for its length and gradual climb. “It’s challenging, but the descents make up for the climbs.  The result overall is a fun race.  It is known to have some of the smoothest singletrack in Summit County.

The Breck Brawl, on August 20, is the series finale. “There’s not a lot of sustained climbing,” Westcott said.  Less climbing on this events means the sprinter have an edge on this type of course.

Breckenridge and Summit County real estate are chock-full of great places to ride.  We are becoming a destination for both mountain and road biking.  With our close proximity to Denver and the front range, many come up on weekends to enjoy the hundreds of miles of trails available in Breckenridge and the thousands of miles available in surrounding Summit and Park County real estate areas.
